why the error Error: File is not in ddiff coded format
occurs when using IBM® Rational® ClearCase® on Microsoft® Windows® to perform a merge operation.
 
Symptom

When performing a manual merge the following error occurs:

merge: error: File is not in ddiff coded format: "C:\TEMP\atr5"

Attempts to to perform a merge in the ClearCase Remote Client (CCRC) either during a UCM deliver operation or while trying to manually merge the files in base ClearCase the following error may occur:

ccrc_xcleardiff: Error: File is not in ddiff coded format

 
Cause

The cause of the problem is that the drive in which the TMP or TEMP variables are set to have reached or are reaching their storage capacity limit.
 
Resolving the problem

Perform any one of the following steps to resolve the issue:

  • Free up some space on the drive in which the temporary files are being written to.
  • Set the TEMP and TMP environment variables to a drive with more space
  • Perform the merge on another machine with more space available.
